Vinca VS. Zinnias

We’re often asked which bedding plant is best for our East Texas summers – Vinca or Zinnia. Each has its own unique traits that can make or break your gardening experience. Understanding the advantages and drawbacks can help you make the best choice. Here’s the good and bad points of each:

Vinca Pros:
• Perfect flower for our hot, sunny climate and is not bothered by high temperatures.
• Doesn’t require frequent watering once it is established.
• Fairly resistant to pests and fungal infections.
• Flowers bloom continuously from April – Fall.
• Great for planting in containers or in beds.
• Deer resistant.
Vinca Cons:
• Doesn’t attract pollinators – not beneficial for butterflies and bees.
• Easy to overwater which promotes root rot and quickly leads to plant loss.
• Fewer color choices – limited to white, pinks, lavender, red, – no yellow or oranges.

Zinnia Pros:
• Perfect for beginner gardeners, growing quickly and not as sensitive to overwatering.
• Lots of color choices, from whites, various shades of pinks, oranges to fiery reds.
• Butterflies and bees love Zinnias, great for supporting local pollination.
• Flowers bloom continuously from April – Fall.
• Deer resistant.
Zinnia Cons:
• Excessive humidity can cause Powdery Mildew.
• Some feel occasional deadheading is required to keep them looking fresh.
• Although beautiful, they can attract a variety of pests.
The decision between Vinca and Zinnias depends on your gardening environment. Both will give you beautiful blooms lasting all season. If you have poor draining soil you might choose to avoid Vinca. However, if you want something that requires less watering, then Vinca is your best choice.
Both flowers will bloom continuously throughout the season in a multitude of colors. Either will add bright, cheerful color to your garden. Happy planting!
