The Snowball Effect: ‘Chinese Snowball’ Viburnum

The ‘Chinese Snowball’ Viburnum (Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’) is best known for its showy flowers, which resemble fluffy snowballs. These blooms are dense clusters of sterile florets that start off greenish-white and transform into a brilliant white as they mature. The plant typically flowers in late spring, offering weeks of spectacular blooms. Ours blooms several time yearly.

Its lush green leaves turn shades of red and orange in autumn, providing seasonal interest long after the flowers have faded. The shrub can reach heights of 8 to 15 feet and a width of 10 to 12 feet, making it an excellent choice for a statement piece or a hedge. It’s also a magnet for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Chinese Snowball Viburnum is a hardy plant preferring well-drained soil and grows well in both full sun and partial shade. This deciduous shrub is relatively low-maintenance, but does require consistent watering during dry periods for optimal growth and bloom production.

Pruning isn’t required but can be done after the flowering season to maintain shape and size. Fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer in early spring encourages vigorous growth and abundant blooms.

This viburnum’s striking blooms make it a versatile addition to any garden. Its long-lasting blooms, vibrant autumn foliage, and adaptability make it an ideal choice for any outdoor space.
