Rise & Shine: Time To Wake Up Your Perennials

As winter fades and the first warm days arrive, East Texas perennials start stirring beneath the soil. The key is to wake them up gently so they can push into spring with strong, healthy growth.
Most perennials here benefit from a late winter refresh — usually late February through early March. This is the ideal time to cut back old stems, clean away leaf litter, and open up the crown just before new shoots emerge. Our region warms early, so timing matters; wait too long and you risk snipping off tender new growth.
A light top dressing of compost gives plants a nutrient boost without overwhelming them, Once days stay consistently warm, resume regular watering and watch for the first flush of green.
With just a bit of early season attention, East Texas perennials wake up quickly and reward you with vigorous spring growth and a long season of color.
