Picking Plants Like A Pro
Walking into our Color House can be a bit overwhelming if you aren’t familiar with plants. It’s big and filled with thousands of brightly colored plants. How do you know what to choose? Here’s how to navigate the house like a pro.
1) Are you planting in the sun or shade? This will make a difference as to what plants you can choose from since most plants prefer either sun or shade, but seldom both.
2) For shade, look on the Shade Loving tables and if you are planting in a sunny spot then focus on the Sun Loving tables. (A plant that requires sun needs at least 5-6 hours of sun per day to bloom well)
3) Are you planting in a container or in the ground? Typically, most plants will perform well in both containers and in your flower bed.
4) If in a container, follow the “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” recipe for great looking designs.
5) If in the ground, what is the size of the area you are planting. This will determine how many plants will fit into the space.
6) Walk through the house and find the plants that catch your eye.
7) Read the plant tag to determine what size they will be at maturity and do some simple math to calculate how many you need for your planting space.
8) You can get fancy and plant a variety of plants in a pattern or choose to plant multiples of one plant for a classic look.
9) Start out with a small area or container, don’t bite off more than you can comfortably finish.
10) Continue planting additional pots or beds with more of your favorite plants to create your own unique look!
