Ornamental Cabbage & Kale

Don’t overlook Ornamental Kale and Cabbage when choosing annual plants for the winter season. I agree that it’s easy to walk by them this time of year since they look so hum drum.

They take a backseat to pansies and snapdragons during October, but once cool weather arrives, the plants begin to show color. The center of the plant morphs from green to bright white, brilliant pink or deep purple/red that makes a colorful statement.

They grow to 12 – 18 inches tall and wide and can be used in containers or in flower beds equally well. They are just as showy as pansies and last throughout the winter months. Plant in sun to part sun in well-draining soil to ensure bright color. Feed them with a slow release fertilizer that will last through the season.
