It’s That Time Again! Pre-Emergent Time!

 

Is it too late to apply a pre-emergent to my lawn and flower beds since it’s fall?

 

No! Fall can be an important time to apply a pre-emergent to help prevent certain cool-season weeds from becoming a problem during the fall and winter months.

The key with pre-emergent herbicides is timing. They work by creating a barrier that prevents susceptible weed seeds from successfully establishing, so they need to be applied before those weeds have already germinated. They will not eliminate weeds that are already actively growing.

 
 

 
 

Choosing the Right Pre-Emergent

 

There are several different pre-emergent products and active ingredients available, including products containing dithiopyr (Dimension®). The right choice depends on where you plan to use it, the weeds you’re trying to prevent, and the type of turf or landscape plants growing in the area.

Always read the product label carefully. Not every pre-emergent is labeled for every lawn, flower bed, ornamental planting, or type of weed.

 
 

Timing Matters!

 

Rather than applying pre-emergent automatically every three or four months, time applications according to the weeds you’re trying to prevent, local soil temperatures, weather conditions, and the directions on your particular product label.

Here in East Texas, fall applications are generally aimed at preventing cool-season weeds, while properly timed late-winter or early-spring applications can help prevent warm-season weeds.

Most pre-emergent products also need to be watered into the soil after application to activate the barrier, but always follow the specific directions on your product label for application rates and watering instructions.

 
 

One More Thing to Remember

 

Because pre-emergents interfere with seed establishment, they can also affect desirable seeds. Pay close attention to label restrictions if you plan to seed or overseed your lawn or flower beds.

A properly timed pre-emergent application can make weed management much easier—but choosing the right product and applying it at the right time are what make the difference!
