Is Your Sprinkler System Doing Its Job?

 

 

This is an excellent time to perform an irrigation test on your sprinkler system. Since most automatic sprinklers are programmed to run during the early morning hours, many homeowners never actually see them operating. When coverage is compromised by an obstacle, a clogged nozzle, or a malfunctioning sprinkler head, your lawn and landscape can quickly begin to suffer.

 
 

What to Check During Your Irrigation Test

 

• Sprinkler heads popping up properly – Make sure each head rises completely and isn’t obstructed by overgrown grass.

• Grass around sprinkler heads – If turf has grown too tall around a sprinkler, trim it back so the spray pattern isn’t blocked.

• Non-functioning sprinkler heads – Check for any heads that aren’t spraying at all.

• Spray pattern – Verify each sprinkler is rotating correctly (360° in open areas or 180° along driveways and sidewalks) so water isn’t wasted on pavement or the street.

• Geysers instead of sprinkler heads – If water is shooting straight into the air, replacing the head may solve the problem. If not, you may have a broken underground line.

• Standing or bubbling water – These are common signs of a leak or broken irrigation line that should be repaired.

• Plants blocking sprinkler coverage – Taller shrubs and perennials can prevent water from reaching smaller plants. Installing a riser can lift the spray above the foliage for better coverage.

• Existing riser height – As plants mature, risers that once worked may no longer be tall enough. Consider pruning overgrown plants or installing taller risers.

• All irrigation zones operating – If an entire zone isn’t coming on, you may have an electrical issue, faulty wiring, or a failed solenoid or valve.

Running an irrigation check at the beginning of the growing season—and again when the summer heat arrives—helps ensure your lawn, trees, shrubs, and flower beds receive the water they need. Catching small problems early can save water, prevent plant stress, and keep your landscape looking its best all season long.
