Houseplants depend on us to provide the nutrients they need to stay healthy and continue growing. Unlike plants growing in the ground, their roots are limited to the soil and nutrients available inside their containers.

 

 
 

Do Houseplants Need Fertilizer?

 

Yes—but how much and how often depends on the plant. Houseplants gradually use nutrients available in their potting mix, and fertilizing can replenish those nutrients and support healthy new growth.

There are many fertilizers made specifically for indoor plants, including liquid, water-soluble, and slow-release formulas. Some plants may do well with a general-purpose houseplant fertilizer, while others have more specific nutritional needs.

 

 
 

When Should I Fertilize?

 

The best time to fertilize is generally when your houseplant is actively growing. For many indoor plants, this means more frequent feeding during spring and summer, with fertilizing reduced or paused when growth naturally slows.

However, indoor growing conditions vary. Plants receiving supplemental grow lights or consistently bright conditions may continue actively growing at other times of the year.

 
 

How Much Fertilizer Should I Use?

 

More fertilizer does not mean more growth! Applying too much can lead to fertilizer burn, damaged roots, or a buildup of salts in the potting mix.

Always follow the directions on your fertilizer label and consider the needs of your particular plant. Never apply more than the recommended amount in an attempt to make a houseplant grow faster.

It’s also best to avoid fertilizing a plant that is severely stressed, extremely dry, or experiencing root problems. Determine what is causing the problem first rather than assuming fertilizer is the solution.

With the right light, proper watering, healthy potting mix, and appropriate feeding, you’ll give your houseplants everything they need to thrive!
