Evergreen Centerpieces
When designing your mixed containers choose a tall plant that lasts year-round as your center-piece or thriller. By using a year-round plant, there’s no need to replace it each season, you only need to switch out the seasonal annuals – saving you time and money!
Place it in the center if your container will be viewed from all sides and plant a variety of plants circling it.
If you will view the pot from 3 sides or less, then place the taller plant at the back of the pot. Layer other plants in front starting with the tallest and finishing with the shortest at the front edge of the pot.
- Here’s a few tall year-round plants to choose from:
‘Blue Point’ Juniper – A versatile conifer that is naturally pyramidal shaped. They can be pruned to stay a specific size in width and height. They stay green even in the coldest of winters, yet the summer heat doesn’t phase them. Give them 5-6 hours of sun daily and well-draining soil.
‘Blue Point’ Juniper topiary – Nurseries sculpt standard Blue Point junipers into spiral shapes, pom-poms, or patio trees that are stand outs in containers. It’s not difficult to keep them pruned by following the original sculpted shape with hand pruners.
‘Sky Pencil’ Holly – Is an evergreen shrub with small, glossy, dark green leaves year-round. It grows narrow and tall and is often grown in containers.
Rosemary – Yes, the herb, but it is perfect for containers. It stays green year-round, is available in a spreading or upright form. Both have light blue flowers and the green needles are very aromatic, plus you can use it for seasoning when cooking. Likes sun and well-draining soil.
‘Star’ Jasmine – Place a small trellis in your container and let Star Jasmine grow to the top. This vine has small green leaves year-round and white, sweet smelling blooms in early summer. It is a perfect backdrop for your favorite annuals.
