Caring for a Crape Myrtle with Scale

 

When it comes to Crape Myrtle care, one of the best places to start is the bark.

There’s a pest that has become a common problem on Crape Myrtles in our region called Crape Myrtle Bark Scale. These small insects feed on the tree and produce a sticky substance called honeydew. Sooty mold then grows on the honeydew, leaving the bark and foliage covered in an unsightly black coating.

How Do I Know If I Have Crape Myrtle Bark Scale?

 

One of the most noticeable signs is black sooty mold covering the bark, branches, or leaves of your Crape Myrtle. If you look closely, you may also notice small white or gray scale insects clustered along the branches and trunk.

The black coating itself is sooty mold rather than the insect, so treating the underlying scale infestation is the important part.

 
 

How Do I Treat Crape Myrtle Bark Scale?

 

A systemic insecticide labeled for Crape Myrtle Bark Scale can be used as part of your treatment plan. Some systemic products are applied as a soil drench around the base of the tree, where the active ingredient is absorbed by the roots and moves through the plant.

Always follow the directions on your specific product label carefully. Application rates and instructions can vary depending on the product and the size of your tree.

For a soil-drench product, the general process may include:

• Measure the amount of product recommended on the label for your tree.

• Mix it with the appropriate amount of water according to the label directions.

• Apply the mixture to the soil around the base of the tree as directed.

 

Keep in mind that the black sooty mold may remain visible for a while even after the scale has been controlled. Over time, weathering and new growth will help improve the tree’s appearance.
