A Tree With Year-Round Color

I’m often asked “is there a tree with year-round color?” There are Magnolias and Leyland Cypress, but the ‘Coral Bark’ Japanese Maple is the clear winner. This tree is on my short list of GREAT trees and here’s why.

It is stunning year-round with colorful appearance changes for each season.

In Fall the bronze/orange leaves are very showy with their color lasting several weeks. While the leaves are the center of attention the bark on younger limbs begins changing from summer tan to vivid scarlet/coral.

After shedding it’s leaves, the bark becomes the distinguishing feature and it’s easy to see how this tree earned it’s name. No, the picture has not been “enhanced” this is the real color!

As new, light green leaves begin emerging in Spring the contrast between the leaves and coral bark is stunning.

As Spring turns to summer the coral bark color changes to tan yet the leaves stay a bright green until Fall when the cycle begins again.

Unlike most Japanese Maples that require shade, the Coral Bark can grow in partial to full sun – even in our East Texas summers! It grows about a foot each year until reaching 15-20 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide. Plant it in well- draining soil since it will not fare well in waterlogged soil.

Plant as an accent tree to create a unique focal point in your yard and it will keep your interest year-round.
