All About Sansiveria

Meet Sansevieria Trifasciata – better known as ‘Snake Plant’ or ‘Mother-in-law Tongue’.

These easy to care for houseplants, are a beginner’s dream!  Able to adapt to dark spaces, dry conditions and even drafty areas enables this poorly named plant to grow almost anywhere.  With only a little love these striking plants really become a thing of beauty.

The number of Sansevieria species can be overwhelming – with cultivators ranging from light green glossy leaves to dark green leaves that appear black in color. There’s a snake plant for every aesthetic. This easy house plant makes it one of the top sellers in the world as it is readily available at most garden centers.  Here at THGC we have two varieties available: Sansevieria ‘Laurentii’ a gorgeous, variegated variety as well as Sansevieria ‘Zeylanica’ with deep green variations throughout the long succulent leaves.

Snake plants are very sensitive to water and are prone to root rot. I always recommend a well-draining soil and pot with drainage holes (hint: succulent soil is excellent for this species). When watering, always check your soil first to make sure it is dry.  Use a moisture meter, it can be your best friend and help you water only when your plants are thirsty.

To keep your snake plant healthy and happy I always recommend placing it in an East facing window, so it can enjoy a few hours of indirect sunlight in the morning.   In the springtime through early fall you can move these beauties outside to a covered patio or deck – just keep them out of direct sunlight.
