Trees
January

Planting

January is an excellent time to plant trees, especially fruit trees.

Transplanting

Can be done this month with good results.

Fertilizing

No fertilizer should be applied to trees this time of year

Pest Control

Scale infestations can be sprayed with a lightweight horticultural oil – do not spray immediately before below freezing temperatures are expected. Spray several times about 10 days apart.

Pruning

Winter is the ideal time to prune both deciduous and evergreen trees. Do not prune spring flowering trees now.

Watering

Water in newly planted trees thoroughly. Established trees will normally receive enough water through rainfall this time of the year.

February

Planting

Continue to plant trees while they are still dormant, and the weather is cool.

Transplanting

Can be done this month with good results.

Fertilizing

No fertilizer should be applied to trees this time of year.

Pest Control

Scale infestations can be sprayed with a lightweight horticultural oil – do not spray immediately before below freezing temperatures are expected. Spray several times about 10 days apart. Spray for most fruit trees begins this month. Never use insect-control aids on fruit trees when they are in bloom.

Pruning

Winter is the ideal time to prune both deciduous and evergreen trees. Do not prune spring flowering trees now. If you haven’t pruned your fruit trees, do so immediately.

Watering

Water in newly planted trees thoroughly. Established trees will normally receive enough water through rainfall this time of the year.

March

Planting

March is still a good time to plant trees.

Transplanting

Can be done this month with good results.

Fertilizing

Use fertilizer stakes or granular products to fertilize your trees.

Pest Control

Continue to spray trees with a lightweight horticultural oil (Dormant Oil) if they are infested with scale. Spray several times about 10 days apart.

Pruning

Trees planted a year or more generally need some pruning. Do not prune pines in March as they tend to bleed more this time of the year.

Watering

Water in newly planted trees thoroughly. Established trees will normally receive enough water through rainfall this time of the year.

April

Planting

You can plant container-grown trees during April with good results.

Transplanting

Fall and winter months are when you should transplant trees.

Fertilizing

You can still apply fertilizer during this month.

Pest Control

To prevent pecan trees from the gall-forming insects it is necessary to spray the trees this month since when you see the galls later in the summer it is too late to do anything.

Pruning

Prune spring-flowering trees this month. Prune off any damage that may have occurred to trees. It is best to wait until new growth begins so you can clearly see what is dead and what is alive. Study all your trees for problems that can be corrected by pruning (low branches, dead or rotten branches, branches blocking views, paths).

Watering

Although the weather can still be mild it may be necessary to water if we have not received enough rain.

May

Planting

May is a good month to plant palm trees. Most trees can be planted now but will need to be watched in regard to watering.

Transplanting

Is best to be done in the fall or winter months.

Fertilizing

Fertilizers will still be beneficial if applied this month.

Pest Control

Watch your trees for anything unusual and bring a sample of the infected leaves to the nursery for diagnosis and solution to the problem.

Pruning

It is still ok to prune your trees.

Watering

As the weather turns hotter it will be necessary to water newly planted trees. Your trees require a rain of 1 to 1 ½ inches per week – if not then you must water them. You can water them with the hose on trickle for 30 to 45 minutes. Do this as needed until a good rain occurs.

June

Planting

All types of shade trees can be successfully planted during June.

Transplanting

Is best done during the fall and winter months.

Fertilizing

Trees often send out a second flush of growth in mid to late summer. Young trees, trees in stress or low vigor can benefit from additional fertilizer. Use half the rate that was applied in January or February.

Pest Control

Watch for signs of pest problems. If you need help with identification of the problem, contact our nursery.

Pruning

Prune as necessary.

Watering

If it has not rained for several weeks, us lawn sprinklers to apply 1 inch of water to your established trees. The root system of these trees extends out well beyond the reach of the branches. Recently planted trees require watering anytime rain does not occur for 5 to 7 days.

July

Planting

You can still plant shade trees during warmer months – just make sure you water the sufficiently. Palm trees should be planted between May and August.

Transplanting

The fall and winter months are the best time to transplant.

Fertilizing

Any young trees, trees in stress or trees in low vigor that were not fertilized in May should be fertilized at this time.

Pest Control

Watch for spider mites on conifers such as cedar and bald cypress. Look for needles or leaves in the interior of the tree to fade and turn brown. You can identify the mites by placing a piece of white paper under the limb, shake the limb vigorously and then look for tiny black spiders to fall onto the paper.

If you see gelatinous sap oozing from spots on the trunk of peaches, nectarines or plum trees it is peach tree borers and can be controlled by spraying the trunk of the tree with insecticide.

Pruning

This time of year, suckers (vigorous, fast-growing shoots that originate low on the trunk or at soil level) need to be pruned flush with the trunk or at their point of origin – even if it’s below ground.

Watering

If it has not rained for several weeks, us lawn sprinklers to apply 1 inch of water to your established trees. The root system of these trees extends out well beyond the reach of the branches. Recently planted trees require watering anytime rain does not occur for 5 to 7 days.

August

Planting

Palms should be planted by the end of this month so they will be well established before cold weather sets in.

Transplanting

Best done during the fall and winter months.

Fertilizing

Watch for iron deficiencies. Symptoms include yellow foliage, a pattern of green veins on a yellow-green background.

Pest Control

This late in the year it is questionable whether spraying a pest is worth it. Deciduous tree leaves often begin a slow decline.

Pruning

Spring flowering trees have set their flower buds for next year and should not be pruned.

Watering

The heat will make it necessary to water recently planted trees if rainfall is less than 1 to 1 ½ inches per week. Use a water hose and let it drip slowly for 30 to 45 minutes at the base of the tree. Watch the lawn to determine when to water older well-established trees. When the lawn looks thirsty it’s time to water shade trees as well. Use a lawn sprinkler and apply about an inch of water.

September

Planting

Container trees can be successfully planted in the month of September even though the weather hasn’t cooled down yet. It is very important to keep the trees watered until adequate rainfall occurs.

Transplanting

Fall and winter months are the best time to transplant.

Fertilizing

This is the last month of the year you would want to fertilize.

Pest Control

It is unlikely this late in the year that pest-control will be necessary but keep an eye out for any abnormal changes in your trees.

Pruning

Spring flowering trees have set their flower buds for next year and should not be pruned. Continue to prune any damaged or dead limbs.

Watering

Temperatures may become milder during this month, but it can still be dry. Make sure that you keep enough water on recently planted trees and use sprinklers on larger, established trees.

October

Planting

Fall tree planting begins this month.

Transplanting

This month may still be too early to transplant trees. You can ready trees for transplanting next month by performing root pruning on them now. By cutting some of the long roots this month, new ones are formed closer to the trunk within the area of the soil that will be moved with the plant.

Push a sharp-shooter shovel straight down, then pull straight out. Form a circle of connected cuts around the tree, make the circle the size of the root ball you are going to dig.

Fertilizing

Do not fertilize with any quick release nitrogen fertilizers this month.

Pest Control

Scale infestations can be sprayed with a lightweight horticultural oil. Spray several times about 10 days apart.

Pruning

Remember that spring flowering trees have already set their flower buds so don’t prune them now.

Watering

Temperatures may become milder during this month, but it can still be dry. Make sure that you keep enough water on recently planted trees and use sprinklers on larger, established trees.

November

Planting

November and December are the best months of the year to plant shade trees.

Transplanting

Can be done this month with good results.

Fertilizing

No fertilizer should be applied to trees this time of year.

Pest Control

Other than scale, few pest problems require treatment now. Apply dormant oil to rid your plants of scale.

Pruning

Winter is the ideal time to prune both deciduous and evergreen trees. Do not prune spring flowering trees now.

Watering

Water-in newly planted trees thoroughly, but you should not have to do much supplemental watering.

December

Planting

December is an ideal time to plant trees.

Transplanting

Can be done this month with good results.
