Other than scale, few pest problems require treatment now. Apply dormant oil to rid your plants of scale.

Winter is the ideal time to prune both deciduous and evergreen trees. Do not prune spring flowering trees now.

Water-in newly planted trees thoroughly, but you should not have to do much supplemental watering.

Roses

Planting

Container roses can be planted this month.

Transplanting

Wait until December or January to transplant roses.

Fertilizing

No fertilizer is needed for the rest of the growing season.

Pest Control

Pest problems are diminishing. You will still see blackspot and aphids may sow up on flower buds or new growth.

Pruning

Avoid heavy pruning that would stimulate new growth.

Watering

Water plants if rainfall is not enough.

Lawn

Planting

Continue to overseed ryegrass if you have not already done so.

Fertilizing

Fertilize ryegrass planted in October in late November after the warm season grass has gone dormant.

Pest Control

Apply a preemergence herbicide early this month if you did not do so in October.

Mowing

Mow ryegrass regularly. Set the mower to a height of 1 to 2 inches.

Watering

In normal circumstances enough rain should fall this month to make it unnecessary to irrigate.

Shrubs

Planting

Both container plants and balled-and-burlapped plants can be planted at this time of the year.

Transplanting

This is the beginning of transplanting season.

Fertilizing

No fertilizer should be applied to shrubs this month.

Pest Control

Few pest problems will exist this time of year. Watch for scale on camellias, hollies, euonymus – the cool season is the perfect time to treat this with oil sprays.

Pruning

Be cautious about what you prune this time of year. The mild temperatures of November don’t send shrubs into dormancy. Pruning can stimulate growth which will be damaged by the winter cold. Spring flowering plants do not need to be pruned at this time of year.

Watering

Established shrubs should not require watering in excess of the rainfall received. Newly planted shrubs will require watering more frequently if the weather is mild and dry.

Perennials

Planting

November is a great month for planting perennials in the garden.

Transplanting

This month is one of the best for transplanting perennials.

Fertilizing

Fertilizer is usually not needed at this time of the year.

Pest Control

Watch for caterpillars, aphids, snails, and slugs and treat if necessary.

Pruning

Tall growing, fall-blooming perennials may need to be staked. Deadhead perennials that are in bloom as needed. After they finish flowering, most should be cut back hard. Cut back and remove dead flower stalks and unattractive foliage from perennials winding down for the year.

Watering

Water plants as needed to maintain a moist soil if weather is dry.

Annuals

Planting

This is the best month for planting cool season annuals.

Fertilizing

Fertilize new plantings at the time of planting and use soluble fertilizer on container plantings.

Pest Control

Watch for snails and slugs and use control aids as necessary.

Watering

Rain in November is usually adequate, but water as needed.
